6 tips for picking the absolute best real estate agent comes from years of seeing the frustration people feel when they are not happy with whom they are working with either as a seller’s agent or a buyer’s agent.
When you are ready to list your home or purchase a home you know you want the best sales agent but there is so much hype out there. Yard signs, billboards, emails, texts, bus stops and more all show a picture of the agent who had over X million dollars in closed business last year but is this the right agent for you?
You will have to do a little work and you should be excited about doing this because when all is said and done it will pay off.
- TALK WITH RECENT CLIENTS OF THE SALES AGENT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HIRING.
When you are starting your interview process ask for a list of homes they have listed and/or sold over the past year. Don’t be afraid to ask if anyone on the list might have a less than favorable response. Many sales agents will have testimonials on their websites but you deserve to know the good and the bad.
- LOOK UP THEIR LICENSE INFORMATION.
Your home state will have a regulatory body where you can see if there have been any issues, disciplinary actions or complaints. You need to check this.
- YOU WANT A TOP AGENT, ONE WHO HAS POSSIBLY WON AWARDS.
Awards are voted on by other sales agents and brokers. You can check with your local Board of Realtors for this information. If their peers have honored them that is a definite plus in helping you make your choice.
- CREDENTIALS ARE IMPORTANT.
If their business card has initials after their name they have taken the time to get additional training in specific areas. If you are unsure what those initials mean, ask the agent and ask them to explain why these credentials make them a better agent. Also, if the sales agent refers to themselves as a Realtor this tells you they belong to the National Association of Realtors and they abide by the Code of Ethics in working with people, and this is important.
- FIND OUT HOW LONG THEY HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS.
You can find this information again through your state’s regulatory body or you can just ask them. You want someone who has been in business for a while, someone who is not using you as a learning lesson. Then ask them if they are a full-time sales agent or if this is only a part-time job for them. Think about that, you truly want someone who has dedicated their time to being in real estate full time. They have their fingers on the pulse of what is happening and you can reach them almost any time of the day.
- ASK FOR A LIST OF THEIR CURRENT LISTINGS.
You can find this information on their company website, or you could just ask, but you want to see how they write it up, what their photos look like, and how many listings look similar to what you want to sell if you are selling.
Buying or selling a home is a very big deal and in order to get that very big deal to the closing table you need to have the absolute best sales agent in your corner.
